We put together some questions for Mercury Recording artist Billy Currington, and he kindly took time out of his busy schedule to sit down and answer them for us. Be on the lookout for Billy's debut self-titled album, which comes out on September 30, 2003.
AboutCountry: Is it harder for you to write songs about events that happened in your life than it is to make something up from scratch?
Billy Currington: It is easier to write about something real than to make it up.
AboutCountry: Who are some of your country music influences?
Billy Currington: Willie Nelson, Keith Whitley, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Kenny Rogers.
AboutCountry: Who are some influences from outside the genre of country music?
Billy Currington: Luther Vandross and John Cougar Mellencamp.
AboutCountry: When was the first time that you realized you wanted to be a country artist?
Billy Currington: The summer between 11th and 12th grade.
AboutCountry: What was it like when you first performed on the Opry?
Billy Currington: It was awesome

AboutCountry: Is there anyone that you'd like to sing a duet with? (Living or dead)
Billy Currington: Rachel Proctor.
AboutCountry: What is the most exciting thing that has happened in your career so far?
Billy Currington: I would say getting the record deal!
AboutCountry: What three people, living or dead, would you invite to dinner if you could? and why?
Billy Currington: Willie Nelson---to breathe his second hand smoke!
AboutCountry: How many instruments do you play? Are you self-taught, or did you take formal lessons?
Billy Currington: Drumsa little.
AboutCountry: It seems that there's been a shift back to traditional styled country as of late; do you feel that there's room for both "traditional" styled vocalists like yourself and "modern" pop-oriented country artists?
Billy Currington: Yes. There should be room. Every artist expresses oneself through music in a different way. Let there be separation!
AboutCountry: Where were you when you first heard your song on the radio?
Billy Currington: Between Jacksonville, FL and Savannah, GA.
AboutCountry: How did it feel to hear one of your songs on the radio?
Billy Currington: I felt proud.
AboutCountry: As an artist who writes their own stuff, what advice could you give to someone who might be reading this about breaking into the business, be it as an artist or writer?
Billy Currington: Write down as many ideas as you can. Move to where it's atfor me it was Nashville, TN.
AboutCountry: What would you like to say to your fans reading this interview?
Billy Currington: Thank you to those who bought my single or album, requested my song on radio stations or video, and I look forward to seeing you somewhere on the road!! Love, Wild Bill
